2nd Annual Author Blog Crawl... my turn to share the love

This is the second year that Kassa  from three am book reviews has organized this wonderful "author appreciation month" and it's a great way to share our thoughts on the great authors out there. Thanks, Kassa! Yesterday's letter was to Josh Lanyon written by Heidenkind from Truth, Freedom, and Books. Please continue on the Blog Crawl tomorrow by visiting Literary Escapism to see who their favorite author will be.

It's now my turn to write a letter to one of my favorite authors. Although the books I normally read and blog about are generally in the m/m romance genre my letter today goes out to an author who's brought the joy of reading to millions of children as well as adults.

Dear J.K. Rowling,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the many hours of reading pleasure your books have given me over the years. My love for Harry Potter and friends began when my youngest daughter brought home Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone from a school book fair in 2000. While she never finished the story (and boy did she miss out) I was completely captivated by Harry, Hermione and Ron and the magical world they live in.

Since childhood I'd been addicted to reading but at that time I found myself with little interest or time for reading. Three teenagers and a demanding job left little "me" time but Harry and his friends revived my reading "spark". I've read all of the books, multiple times in fact, and have seen the movies as well and I continue to enjoy your stories as much now as when I first began reading them. Despite the fact that my kids surprisingly never picked up my love of reading we have enjoyed the movies together.

As I look forward to the release of the last movie in July I've begun to share my love of reading, and Harry Potter, with my seven year old grandson. A new Harry Potter fan!!

So thank you for creating and sharing Harry and his magical world. And a great big thank you also for the upcoming release of the Harry Potter series as ebooks. I look forward to adding them to my Sony and reading them once again.

Lily

Beautiful letter Lily. I too have read all of the books, the first 6 out loud. :-) It's great you are able to share the books with your Grandson and his imagination has been caught up in that world too.

You know I haven't read Harry Potter. I don't know if I should hide myself away or what. I read the first book and just wasn't too into it. Yet I see letters like this that eloquently talk about the books and makes me want to give it a try.

Great letter.

Thanks, Tam!

It really is amazing to share the stories with Alex now. :)

Thanks, Kassa!

Like any book it's not going to appeal to everyone but perhaps if you gave it a second chance you might enjoy them. :)

Great letter, Lily!

I've never read the books... however, I have listened to the audiobooks more than once. Jim Dale's voice is absolutely perfect for them.

Great letter, Lily! I'm not a huge Harry Potter fan, but I have read all seven books, and no one can deny this author's influence in getting thousands of formerly non-readers to discover reading!

Kassa, if you read back on these comments, the first book seemed to me like it was really written for kids. I wasn't too into it either and got through it so I could get on to the rest out of curiosity. The next six change a LOT in tone and become more engaging, more sophisticated, and more complex, and darker. If that helps. :)

Wonderful letter, Lily. I, too, am a fan of the Harry Potter books!

My son mentioned recently that he grew up with them, literally. It was great sharing them with him when he was young, but even better when he was older and had more opinions about them!

Thanks, Chris!

I have to confess I've never listened to an audio book. My youngest daughter loves them. She's gets them at the library and says it's great but for some reason they've never appealed to me.

Lily said...

Thanks, Val!

I agree with your comment. As the books progress they do become more complex and engaging.

Thanks, Wren!

The HP series is definitely something that families can share. Although my kids never read the complete series we've enjoyed the movies and now I get to share the experience with Alex. :)

My boss at work 10 years ago lent me the first two books. She was my mother's age and absolutely enchanted with the series. And I was too :)

I remember reading the fourth book during my lunch break at work and having the managing director tell me he had to sneak into his daughter's room at night when she was asleep and 'borrow' her copy to read a few chapters, always returning it before she woke up! Luckily I had my own copy.

So many memories! Thank you Lily! Lovely letter!

Thanks, Orannia!

I'm glad you enjoy the series as well.

Great choice for your author letter! Before falling into reading as a hobby a couple of years ago, I didn't read for pleasure at all. I found the idea to be ridiculous (crazy, I know). But I DID read the Harry Potter books. They were that good. :)

Thanks, Julie!

Glad you enjoyed the series as well. :)

Wonderful letter, Lily!
I've got to confess that I never read the books, just watched the movies. But the importance of these books is evident. Great choice for your fan letter! :)

Lily said...

Thanks, Janna!

As much as I've enjoyed the movies (and I'm so looking forward to July 15th) I've got to say reading the books is the best way to experience HP. Perhaps one day you'll give them a try. :)

Lovely letter - I'm a fan, and have read the books, listened to the books, and watched the movies. I love that these books get kids hooked on reading.

Lily said...

Thanks, Patti!

I've had a few people mention the audiobooks. I may have to give them a try sometime. :)

Loved your letter, Lily!

I've got the audiobooks for the whole series. They're great for long car rides, or for just listening to when I'm getting ready for work in the morning.

I'll admit I haven't watched the movies for the last 2 books - after the Goblet of Fire movie (which was very good, but deviated a lot from the book and skipped cool stuff), I decided to just stick to the books. lol

Lily said...

Thanks, Ava! :)

Another audio book comment... I definitely need to get those. Sounds like they're worth listening to.

Chris said...

Lily: They ARE. I think I read that Jim Dale does around 125 different voices for the series. He was on Letterman and such, which isn't that common for an audiobook reader, you know?

Lily said...

125?? wow!

I'll have to check and see if they're available at the library.

Wonderful letter, Lily. I have to admit that I never could get into the books, as they just weren't my thing, but have enjoyed the movies. :)

Lily said...

Sorry Tracy but it seems your comment was stuck in moderation limbo. Oops!

I'm glad you at least enjoyed the movies. Harry's world is definitely worth experiencing.
